New Labour = cuts privatisation and war

We need a party that stands for the millions not the millionaires

For immediate use 22 September 2006

The Campaign for a New Workers Party has organised a Public Rally, to coincide with the start of Labour Party conference.  The Rally takes place in Manchester, outside the Labour Party Conference, on Sunday September 24th, 3 – 5 pm, at the Mechanics Centre in Princess St.  Speakers include Brian Loader (Staff Side Secretary NHS logistics (personal capacity), Dr Jackie Grunsell (Huddersfield Save Our NHS councillor); Cllr Dave Nellist (Leader of the Socialist Group on Coventry City Council) and Janice Godrich (President, PCS personal capacity).

The Campaign for a New Workers’ Party (CNWP) issued the following statement today:

“The National Stop The War Coalition Demonstration in Manchester tomorrow, Saturday, has been aptly entitled ‘Time to Go’.  The slogans are ‘Troops Out of Iraq’; ‘Don’t Attack Iran’; ‘Hands Off Lebanon’; ‘No Trident Replacement’.  We will be on the demonstration, and we agree with these demands, but we want to take them a stage further.  It is also time for a new left party, a party for the millions and not the millionaires.  Labour is finished.  It is time for Blair to go, and it is time for Labour to go – but we need to build a replacement,”  CNWP Press Officer Pete McLaren stated today.

Socialist Councillor and National Chair of the CNWP Dave Nellist added, “ It will make little or no difference whoever replaces Blair.  The Labour Party is now committed to a right wing agenda.  It has privatised education and re-introduced selection by creating academy schools.  It has privatised large parts of the health service and cut state funding so that hospital services face closure.  Labour has done nothing to restore trade union rights and is now attacking those on benefits.  The gap between rich and poor has grown under Labour with the fat cats receiving record bonuses of £19 billion while 12 million people live below the poverty line – and this is in addition to waging war on millions of innocent citizens in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Enough is enough,” he continued, “This Labour Party Conference will do nothing to change Labour’s right wing march.  Electors nowadays have no political choice at election time.  This is why I am campaigning for a New Workers Party which will put people before profit and welfare before warfare.”
